Asmongold isn’t afraid to express his thoughts on whatever is trending on the internet. He’s most recently focused on the rise of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, criticizing those who’ve spent a lot of money on their own pixelated monkey in a sailor hat.
Several influential people have jumped on the cryptocurrency, blockchain, and, most recently, NFTs bandwagons. Amouranth, a popular influencer and streamer, even had an NFT made in her likeness and sold for over $100,000. It’s difficult to avoid a discussion or opinion piece about NFTs as the popularity of blockchain technology grows. Many people see non-fungible tokens as a source of contention as they begin to make their way into the gaming world.
He is one of those who sees NFTs as a contentious issue, and he recently expressed his thoughts on Twitter. The Twitch streamer has a history of speaking out on a variety of issues and has always been open to sharing his thoughts. The majority of his criticisms are related to the MMORPG games he’s known for playing, such as his statements about the bugs in New World or the recent updates to World of Warcraft. However, he has recently turned his attention to NFTs, believing that while blockchain technology is a good idea, the way it is currently being used, as well as people spending thousands of dollars on NFTs, is “ridiculous.”
The streamer’s point of view has elicited a mixed response. While fellow streamer 39daph agreed that “there are wayyy more people trying to scam each other than people who actually care about the technology/art aspect,” another commenter disagreed, saying that “the same could be said about people spending money to watch other people play video games.” However, the opposite isn’t surprising, as Asmongold has received plenty of criticism in the past, including from fellow streamer xQc.
Despite Asmongold’s views, many people on the internet take NFTs very seriously. NFT games are even making their way into the gaming industry, causing consternation and concern among those who wonder if pay-to-play and pay-to-earn systems will become more common. Though Xbox boss Phil Spencer did not say that the company would not consider making NFT games, he did say that “anything Xbox sees as exploitative for fans isn’t welcome on its storefronts or platforms.” Dead by Daylight developers were recently chastised for including NFTs in their game. Delving into NFTs now appears to be a contentious and possibly exploitative move, particularly in the gaming industry.
