Twitch streamer and internet sensation Imane ‘Pokimane‘ Anys has landed in hot water after sharing a meme mocking the ongoing Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard defamation trial.
Depp has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Heard, alleging that Heard’s numerous accusations of abuse against him are false. The ongoing court case has exposed disturbing allegations of physical and emotional abuse on both sides, and it isn’t exactly a laughingstock.
The entire situation has been treated as a joke by the rest of the world. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Depp vs. Heard is actually a very serious case, what with the tasteless Saturday Night Live sketches and endless TikTok’s making light of the situation.
It’s the same on Twitch. Many popular streamers have taken to livestreaming the ongoing trial, frequently sharing their opinions and the occasional joke in between the testimonies recounting harrowing tales of an increasingly volatile and abusive relationship.
On May 3, Pokimane released her first video about the case, joking that Heard had googled how to look sad in court. Since then, she has been following along, and on May 17, she shared an ill-advised meme in which Pam from The Office says that two different photos of Heard’s bruises are the same picture.
While there have been numerous tasteless memes created and shared in connection with the Depp vs. Heard case, the fact that Pokimane chose to share one drew immediate condemnation.
Anys has since deleted the tweet and has made no further statements about the incident.
