The Pokemon Trading Card Game has a lot of money to be made, but the value of the rarest cards can vary significantly depending on the grade. A PSA 10 card can be worth a lot of money, but an 8 or 9 can be worth a lot less. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams out there right now, as Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo discovered the hard way. The Twitch streamer recently revealed that he was duped into paying $150,000 for a set of cards that were clearly not what was advertised.
The subject was brought up during a discussion about Logan Paul, who recently spent $3.5 million on a sealed case containing six booster boxes of 1st Edition Base Set Pokemon cards. The case was discovered to be full of G.I. Logan Paul has since received his money back after receiving Joe cards instead. However, the incident demonstrated how common these types of scams are becoming.
The Pokemon Trading Card Game has seen a significant increase in secondary market interest over the last two years. Streamers have fueled a lot of that interest. It will be interesting to see how this affects the TCG market now that scams like these are being exposed.
The bubble may finally begin to burst, and streamers may begin to shift their attention away from them. At the very least, it might persuade a few casual fans to be a little more frugal with their cash!
