Super Smash Bros. has been around for more than two decades, and some of the veteran fighters haven’t changed much since their debut. Players are now demanding that Mario, Nintendo’s main character, have his moveset completely overhauled.

Nintendo released Smash Bros. in 1999 as the first video game crossover. It pitted a small cast of characters from Nintendo’s most well-known games against one another.

Link, Donkey Kong, and Mario were among the eight characters in the original Smash roster. The original eight characters would return in every Smash Bros. installment, with their movesets largely unchanged.

Later on, third-party characters would be added to the roster, with Masahiro Sakurai handcrafting their movesets. Players, on the other hand, are beginning to question how much thought and care went into Mario’s moveset.

Since 1999, Mario has only had one notable moveset change. Sakurai replaced his down-b with F.L.U.D.D in Smash Bros. at that time. Brawl. This means that Mario’s moves are all based on games prior to Super Mario Sunshine.

Mario’s moveset is considered outdated by some players. On Twitter, Twitch streamer GamesCage expressed his opinion that Mario’s cape would have been a better glide mechanic than a reflecting move. This sparked a heated debate among Super Smash Bros. players.

Obviously, GameCage isn’t the only one who is dissatisfied with Mario’s actions. Others believe his down-b should be a ground pound, which is one of Mario’s most famous moves in his own game.

Mario’s up-b is lame, according to some players, because it’s just his normal jump with a hitbox. The Propeller Mushroom, Wing Cap, or Tanooki suit, according to players, would be a better up-special.

Sakurai has provided a video alongside the release of the most recent characters in Smash Bros to explain the inspiration behind each move. Even seasoned fighters like Link have had minor changes to match his most recent games.

Mario’s moves, on the other hand, are still stuck in the Wii and GameCube era. Check out this mod that lets you play as the Among Us Impostor for more Smash news.
