Twitch streamer CohhCarnage has questioned the use of subathons by top broadcasters who already make a “tonne of money” on the platform.
Since Ludwig’s historic Twitch subathon in April, the trend has grown in popularity on the platform, with countless streamers allowing their audience to boost the clock and keep it running. Donations and subscriptions frequently add a specific amount of time to a stream, allowing personalities to stay live for numerous days at a time.
While subathons are commonly thought of as an event in the Twitch community, CohhCarnage has questioned their utility for streamers who already have large monthly fanbases.
A user asked CohhCarnage on his October 27th live show if he would consider doing a subathon in the future. Cohh responded by stating that he does not believe top broadcasters should participate in subathons because they are already handsomely funded by their community each month. When it comes to major streamers, Cohh describes them as “over the top,” so it’s clear he wouldn’t feel comfortable asking his community to donate only to keep him alive.
He said; “It gets to a point where you’re making so much money, your community is already being so supportive of you… it just seems a little much to me”.
According to Cohh, subathons have a place on Twitch and may be a great tool for building a community, especially for smaller streamers. However, he believes that subathons are no longer necessary in the majority of situations for the top earners in the streaming community.
He added; “I’m talking about the very top end of streamers, I’m not talking about normal streamers. And for the record, subathons absolutely have their place… I did them”.
Although Cohh believes that prominent personalities no longer need to conduct subathons for personal gain, he recognizes the platform’s good impact on many broadcasters.
He further clarified that his purpose was not to call anyone out, and that he was simply responding to a viewer’s query on whether he would host his own subathon.
