Following the public release of the first James Webb Space Telescope images, NASA researchers took to Twitch to livestream some of their most recent discoveries. Unfortunately, streamers were more likely to focus on production mistakes than anything else when discussing the American space program.
Even better than the Hubble Space Telescope, the Webb Space Telescope has produced some of the clearest images of the solar system and beyond. NASA’s stream drew thousands of viewers from its own channel and streamer-watch parties, as well as from other scientists, students, and even streamers.
Only a few minutes into the presentation, the livestream started to have serious technical problems. The stream kept pausing, buffering and restarting. Throughout the two-hour production, NASA’s stream had to be restarted five times due to issues with audio levels and connections to remote locations.
The OTK stars Nmplol and Melena gave the NASA production team some fair criticism. Nmplol expressed dissatisfaction with the audio quality, particularly with the popping of the microphones. Melena skillfully drew attention to the contrast between NASA’s complex space technology and its subpar manufacturing capabilities.
Zoil, a fellow streamer, made a comparison between the NASA production and OTK’s most recent Games Expo, saying that the latter’s production quality was somehow superior.
xQc, one of the most well-known individual streamers on Twitch, also contributed to the criticism of NASA’s broadcast. While thousands of fans around the world were amazed and excited when NASA revealed its most recent telescope, its accompanying stream did not.
