IP addresses of Dead by Daylight streamers have been leaked, resulting in police raids, doxxing, and DDOS attacks.
DDOS attacks (shutting down someone’s internet), swatting (calling the cops to raid someone), and doxxing are all happening as a result of Dead by Daylight streamers’ IPs being leaked (revealing their address to the public). Elix, one of these streamers, asked what advice he would give to anyone playing Dead by Daylight. Use a VPN right away.
Elix, a Twitch streamer and partner who is also a member of Stream Queens, a group of 95 other creators who “seek to unite the Drag queens, kings, characters, and creatures of Twitch in one place,” claims that they were a victim of DDOS attacks and swatting, claiming that they had guns pointed at them before being handcuffed in front of their neighbors, and that the team Stream Queens is being targeted specifically, and shared information about the DDOS attacks and swatting with Dead by Daylight, but has yet to hear back. He has Twitch coworkers who have reached out to me to let me know he has someone to talk to, but Twitch has not reached out to him or said anything about his experience.
Since the attacks, Elix has taken steps to protect themselves; the VPN they mention is a tool that allows you to hide your location by connecting to another server. You can make it appear as if you’re in Japan or Canada while actually streaming from the UK. Doxxing, swatting, and DDOSing are all prevented as a result of this.
He has a new IP address and is using a VPN, according to him, and he has deactivated some of his personal social media accounts that he had before pursuing content creation four years ago. He’s also in contact with law enforcement and the FBI, which has assigned a detective to the case.
Steamers should also “get a new IP address,” which some internet providers make simple by stating that all you have to do is turn off your modem for ten minutes and you’ll have a new IP address. Then use a VPN to hide it from DDOS attacks and the risk of being doxxed.
Since the attacks on Dead by Daylight streamers across the platform – both inside and outside of Stream Queens – the developer has issued a statement stating that it is now investigating cases of DDOS over the last week and that the reports are taken very seriously. They’re also keeping a close eye on the situation, both internally and with their partners, to gather as much data as possible and spot trends.
Regardless, if you plan on streaming Dead by Daylight anytime soon, be cautious and secure your IP address. They haven’t decided how they’ll go public yet.
