According to a new blog post by Rare producer Joe Neate, one million players have reached the endgame milestone Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves.

That’s a sizable number of players who have joined the game since its launch and have stayed long enough to unlock the endgame content. One of SoT’s biggest issues has always been keeping players around after they’ve sampled everything the game has to offer. Rare’s decision to rework the game around the new player experience has paid off, as evidenced by this achievement.

Rare is throwing a week-long in-game pirate party to commemorate the occasion.

When a player reaches Level 50 on any three of the game’s major trading companies and purchases their corresponding level promotions, they earn the title of Pirate Legend. Hitting Pirate Legend unlocks long legendary voyages with the rarest and most valuable loot in the game. It also grants the shanty “We Shall Sail Together.” The secret, subterranean Pirate Legend Hideout can be accessed by playing this shanty in any outpost tavern. Vendors selling rare and exorbitantly priced cosmetics that denote your status on the high seas can be found in this hidden area.

Obtaining the status of Pirate Legend used to be a difficult task. I played Sea of Thieves on a semi-regular basis during its first year, but I didn’t get into PL until just before the Year 2 content was released. It’s a lot easier to hit Pirate Legend these days. The journey to 50 is much faster now that the trading company level cap has been raised to 75. LDSylvr, a popular Sea of Thieves streamer, holds regular challenges to see how fast they can reach Pirate Legend.

As a result, the official Pirate Legend title and garments are widely regarded by the SoT community as a sign of a bad player. Anyone caught wearing them is immediately labeled a braggart and a showboat. The standard procedure is to hit PL, be proud of yourself for doing so, but not to make a big deal about it. Pirate Legend is a state of mind, not a garish purple waistcoat covered in gold chain, as the true Sea Dog understands.

There is, in fact, a pirate gathering. Rare will launch a week-long Pirate Legend celebration starting tonight AEST.
