StevenInSpawn was born with a neuromuscular disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA.) It is a terminal illness that causes the muscles to weaken and deteriorate over time until the body stops functioning altogether. When he was nine years old, it had already reached the point, where he would no longer e able to eat, drink, breath or even talk on his own anymore and doctors gave him a few months to live. Although he wanted to give up, his mother gave permission for him to receive tracheoscopy, which he continues to rely on until today.
After many months, a nudrse brought in a computer with a video game on it that was connected to many other children’s hospitals around the world. It was an RPG world where he could meet and talk to other children. His first encounter was with a pink star under a waterfall. He spoke to that girl for hours about their experiences. It not only initiated his love of gaming, but also helped to ease his loneliness and fear, and he continued to visit that spot for long after she disappeared.
By 2018, most of his body was paralyzed, aside from his mouth and eyes. So, He uses technology to help him move his head, type and use a mouse. The technology that enables him to use a keyboard was originally adapted from the programming in Flight Simulator.
He is also the COO of AbleGamers. He joined this initiative in 2005. The founder started it as an Everquest blog that aimed to help make the game more accessible to the disabled community. It then branched out to include other titles as well. The founder had multiple sclerosis and it eventually made it impossible for him to play games with standard equipment. He tried researching how he could continue playing, found there was no information and so decided to set up his own help site.
Although there was initially some resistance to the concept, they are now often approached by gaming corporations for advice on how to implement tools such as audio cues for the blind and sensory feedback and closed captions for the deaf. Part of their activities entails providing disabled individuals with grants for equipment to help them play. They also donate gaming supplies to children’s hospitals.
