Twitch streamer Pokimane recently responded to a viewer’s question sarcastically about her joke that she made about women not belonging in the kitchen.
Pokimane is not new to controversy, whether it’s manufactured, absurd, or serious. Pokimane seems to be in the midst of a new controversy every time one ends.
Pokimane has been responding to some of her Twitch followers about a joke she made on her stream this week. Pokimane, dripping with sarcasm, told the aggressive instigators in her chat that “my one kitchen joke for sure means I’m sexist,” after which she said “all women belong in the kitchen.”
Pokimane was unconcerned about the backlash she received for a recent Twitch stream joke. “Why did I say ‘All women belong in the kitchen,'” she began, deciding to amuse those attempting to catch her in some ill-advised trap first.
Pokimane then makes it clear that she’s joking, and her chat is constantly filled with laughing emoji, indicating that they understand what she’s getting at and are familiar with her sense of humor and character. Pokimane exaggerates when she says that “the worst thing in life is having to explain that a joke is a joke,” but as a Twitch streamer, she says that “you have to do that” sometimes, if only to make it painfully obvious that they aren’t, as in this case, sexist.

Even a mocking joke, whether intended or not, can reinforce these ideas, but Pokimane can’t be held responsible for every belief her thousands of Twitch viewers hold.
