Amazon Game Studios’ freshly released PC MMO New World does not allow players to name their character after the firm or its founder Jeff Bezos.
One of the first things PC Gamer did was test what character names they could get away within the game, which led to the finding. The terms “Bezos,” “Amazon,” “JeffB,” “Bez0s,” “Be Zos,” and other similar variations are designated as “cannot be used.”
When you use swear words in a character name, you’ll get the notice “cannot be used.” It’s worth noting that this is distinct from a name that’s already in use, which will get the warning “this name is in use.”
Interestingly, the spoonerism name Beff Jezos isn’t locked away, albeit it has been scooped up by an eagle-eyed New World enthusiast.
The number of Amazon-related identities locked must be in the thousands at this point, given the game was reported to have around 600,000 concurrent players yesterday (September 28). According to SteamDB, the peak concurrent players are at 707,230, and it is now the second most played game on Steam, behind only Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Peak concurrent players during the New World beta tests earlier this year were over 200,000, and the game already has 255,000 Twitch followers.
In other news, nearly 1 million concurrent viewers tuned in to streamers playing New World on its first day. New World was one of the most-watched games on Twitch yesterday, thanks to a couple of big-name streamers picking up the MMO.
