One of Twitch’s most successful channels may be branching out into the video game sector.
Critical Role, a popular Dungeons & Dragons show starring a cast of voice actors, is reportedly in talks to license a video game based on the fantasy world it created for the show. An agent for Critical Role told Variety in a long interview that the group was in talks with various developers and publishers about cooperating on a video game, but no specifics were offered.
Making video games, according to cast member Liam O’Brien, “takes forever, especially if you want it to be something great.”
While Critical Role appears to want to collaborate with a well-known developer and publisher, this isn’t the first time that broadcasters have expressed interest in making video games.
Dr Disrespect revealed earlier this year that he was launching a video game development studio focused on developing AA/AAA games in partnership with well-known content creators. Given that the majority of the cast has voiced in several games, making a video game seems like a reasonable next step for Critical Role. However, video games aren’t the only thing on the cast’s to-do list.
While a Critical Role video game appears to be years away, the D&D organization has a number of other projects in the works. According to Variety, Critical Role is working on an animated show with Amazon in addition to launching its third campaign soon.
“The Legend of Vox Machina” began as a Kickstarter campaign to create a one-off special, but it caught Amazon’s interest, resulting in a whole show based on the first Critical Role campaign. “The Legend of Vox Machina” will be a 22-minute animated program that will include all of the violence, profanity, and sexual situations from the original campaign.
