Twitch streamer and speedrunner Liam Kings came within seconds of setting a new Super Mario 64 world record, but an unfortunate incident derailed his plans.
However, there is some good news: Liam still holds the world record for Super Mario 64. On November 7th, 2021, the streamer set the record with a time of 1:37:53.4.
Liam was on his way to breaking his own record during one of his recent live streams, until he got to one of the final Bowser throws and all hope was lost.
Liam was down to his final Bowser throw, and he had no trouble hitting the first two shots. Unfortunately, the streamer missed his shot on the third throw, but that wasn’t the worst of it.
Liam lets out a sigh after missing the shot, but quickly gathers himself and tries to salvage what he can. Liam made his move to go back in after Bowser landed, but he didn’t account for how close he was to the map’s edge. As a result, Mario plummeted off the side of the map, causing a catastrophic failure.
He was on track for a world record time of 1:37:39, according to the streamers overlay. This would have shaved 14 seconds off his current world record time. Some fans speculated that even if Bowser’s throw attempt had failed, he would still have shaved 10 seconds off his current world record.
Unfortunately, once he fell off the map’s edge, the game was over. You can see the fail in the video below, and you can also follow Liam’s speedrunning attempts on his Twitch channel.
