On January 28, Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be released on Nintendo Switch, but the embargo for press outlets who received a game code prior to release has been lifted–and early reviews have been raving about the latest monster collector.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in the past, in the Sinnoh region’s bygone era, and has you exploring the unexplored Hisui area. You battle and catch monsters in the same way you do in Pokémon, but in a more open-world setting similar to Capcom’s Monster Hunter Stories. The goal is to complete Hisui’s first Pokédex, and Arceus, the legendary Pokémon, will make an appearance or two.
Many smaller Twitch streamers were able to get their hands on allegedly emulated versions of the game. Like the new Pokémon types that have appeared in the Hisui region, or the fact that the monsters are giants, and everyone wants to be trampled by them, Lady Dimitrescu style.
Putting the leaks aside, Pokémon Legends: Arceus continues to receive positive press. Sites like GameSpot and The Verge agree that, while the gameplay and design are a little sloppy at times, this new entry is the most ambitious Pokémon has been in years. For a franchise that has been around since the 1990s, that’s quite a feat.
