Over the last few weeks, World of Warcraft veteran Asmongold has become the most popular Twitch streamer.
It’s been impossible to avoid hearing about the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial over the last few weeks, and Twitch was no exception. With most of Twitch’s top streamers participating in the trend, watching the trial and reacting with viewers became something of a new meta on the streaming platform.
While some streamers were offended, Asmongold appears to have benefited from the strategy. Despite the fact that Asmongold usually streams World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs, he found himself streaming the trial for hours up until June 1, resulting in a massive increase in viewership.
SullyGnome recently revealed some recent viewership figures, with Asmongold coming out on top. Since May 20, Asmongold has had over 12 million hours watched on TwitchTracker, with an average of over 117,000 viewers.
Many people were surprised to learn that Asmongold had watched more hours in the last few weeks than Twitch’s top streamer, Felix “xQc” Lengyel, who was also broadcasting the trial. Asmongold won by 400,000 hours, putting xQc in second place.
When the trial ended, Asmongold’s stream had a peak viewership of 450,000 people.
Hundreds of thousands of people watched Asmongold’s YouTube videos about the situation. This is most likely due to Asmongold’s outspoken nature, with fans eager to see his reactions to the trial and hear his opinions.
Asmongold, like most Twitch streamers, was not afraid to express his opinions and was unabashedly biased in favor of Johnny Depp. This is one of the reasons why fans clung to Asmongold’s every word throughout the trial, in addition to his apparent deep understanding of the legal system and laws.
