Liam, like Ash Ketchum, is a young boy trying to make his Pokemon dreams come true.
As part of a fundraiser to help send him to the World Championships in London, a young Pokemon fan is currently streaming himself playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game for 24 hours.
For the first time, the Pokemon World Championships will be held outside of North America this year, in London, England, and Liam hopes to travel there from his hometown of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
Liam has started a GoFundMe page with the help of his family in the hopes of raising $5000 CAD so that he can pursue his dream of becoming the best like no one before him.
Players must compete in regionals in order to be invited to compete in the World Championships, and Liam was able to qualify for the 2020 Pokemon World Championships. Liam needed to earn 350 points in his division and travel to compete, for example, to Portland, Oregon in the United States.
Unfortunately, the 2020 Pokemon World Championships had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the event will return this year to the Excel Centre in London, where it was originally scheduled two years ago.
He has high-functioning autism, which means he has hyper-focus for certain things and can do really well with them, and Pokemon is one of those things. The young competitor says the Pokemon Trading Card Game is as strategic as chess because of the math and patterns involved.
Liam has revealed on his stream, which has lasted over an hour, that he shoveled snow to earn money to buy Pokemon cards, and that his father was the one who encouraged him to get into the hobby. Liam has a full schedule of activities planned for his 24-hour stream.
Teaching people how to play the game and, mysteriously, making art out of bananas are both covered in the program. During his stream, Liam will compete in online competitions, and his fundraiser received a boost from Sierra Dawn, a well-known Pokemon caster, who tweeted a link to Liam’s GoFundMe.
