CTR: Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled is a remake of the 1999 classic kart-racing video game CTR Crash team racing. As little has been revealed about the game itself beyond character feature clips and promotional videos, we can assume that aside from updated graphics, the game will attempt to be largely true to the original. As they did an excellent remake of the Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, it’s likely that CTR Nitro Fueled will meet the hype that has been building up around it.

There will be both offline and online options available, with the online mode allowing for multiplayer queues. Players will also be able to toggle between the original music tracks from the 1999 game, and remixed versions. The game is planned for simultaneous release on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch release on June 21, 2019. It’s unknown whether there are plans to convert the game to PC as well, but since they did so with the N. Sane remake, there is a good chance that it might happen.

It is being developed by Beenox and Published by Activision. The director confirmed that CTR: Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled was built from scratch in the Alchemy engine.

The Premise

The plot has not yet been revealed, but the director has stated that each level, though unique, will still be incorporated into the overall storyline. Based on the character clips, it seems that Nitros Oxide has decided to participate in a race with the other characters in order to determine the fate of their planet. This ties in with the original plotline that presented Nitros Oxide as an alien who would gain possession of planets across by visiting them and forcing the inhabitants to participate in a ‘Survival of the Fastest’ race, with their planet as the prize.

Gameplay

So far, the majority of test-players have said that they find the controls to be intuitive, fluid and very faithful to the overall feel of the original game. Each race comprises of eight racers, with AI bots filling in for any missing real players. Although bots, they have been reported to offer a decent challenge to players. Players will also have the option of playing split-screen for two and possibly four players, which would allow players to monitor their opponent’s movements and plot their best course of action. Of course, their opponents will also be able to do so, which should add a new dimension to the challenge.

Aside from that, CTR Nitro Fueled will also be bringing back previous mechanics such as speed ramps, sliding, critters weaving in and out of the path as well as other surprises.

Characters

Coco’s Electron Skin

So far, the characters that have been announced or appeared in the promotional content are Crash Bandicoot, Coco Bandicoot, Fake Crash, Dr. Neo Cortex, Tiny Tiger, Papu Papu, Nitros Oxide, Polar, Crunch Bandicoot, Dr. N. Gin, Pura and Ripper Roo. The full cast has not yet been confirmed. As the original game also featured, Dr. N. Tropy, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe Potoroo, and Penta Penguin, so it’s probable that the same will hold true for this game. This is pretty exciting for fans, as Nitros Oxide was not a playable character in the original franchise.

The creators have also promised that they will do their best to imprint unique personalities to each of the characters. These will be seen through their reactions, emotes and playstyles.

It seems that as with the original game, players will start with eight playable characters to choose from, with more being unlocked as they progress in the Adventure Mode. So far, the exact number of characters has not yet been announced.

Karts

While CTR: Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled will feature the karts from the original game, the director has also confirmed that they will be adding some of the karts from the other Crash Bandicoot racing games, including Crash Nitro Kart.

Racing Tracks

It has been confirmed that there will be at least 37 racing tracks in CTR. Most of them will be remastered tracks from the original CTR, while 13 will be sourced from Crash Nitro Kart, as well as the tracks from the battle arenas, and Desert Storm, Magnetic Mayhem, Frozen Frenzy, Temple Turmoil and Terra Drome battle arenas, Crash Nitro Kart.

Each track is a different level and has been reworked to fit in both with the updated animation and graphics technologies, as well as the level-specific music tracks. With the tracks from later games, certain features such as anti-gravity zones were removed so as to ensure continuity between levels that fit with the track construction of the original game.

Loot

Based on the trailers, it appears that there are at least three types of crates that players can collect while they’re racing around the track. The standard brown crate contains apple-like Wumpas, while Mystery Crates contain a random item that will offer the player a certain boost. Finally, the TNT crates can be collected and then dropped in front of another character in order to disrupt their progress. Aside from crates, players can also collect Wumpas, although it’s unknown whether they give bonuses beyond points at this stage. Individual Wumpas can also be found on the tracks. Wumpas can be used to upgrade power-up abilities like the rocket boosts and shields.

Modes

The CTR: Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled has announced that there will be six modes available upon release:

Single Player Modes:

  • Adventure:
    This is a solo-player offline story-based mode that allows players to defeat bosses and unlock new characters and items as they progress in the game. It is sub-divided into ‘Classic’ and ‘Nitro-Fueled’ modes, with the latter allowing players to customize characters and karts whenever they would like to.
  • Time Trial:
    In the original version, players would try to beat N. Tropy’s fastest time in order to unlock more time trials against his ghosts. When all of them were beaten, N. Tropy would be unlocked for all modes. Presumably this ill hold true for CT Nitro Fueled.

Multiplayer:

  • Arcade modes: 
    These are the offline two-player racing mode. Each Arcade mode has three difficulty levels.
    • Single: Players can race against one other player on a single track to attempt the fastest race time.
    • Cup: Two players compete on a set of four tracks for one of four associated cups.
  • Online Multiplayer modes:
    These allows for a maximum of four players to compete against each other online through either soloQ or friend lobbies to race online. In the original game there were no AI bots, but from the clips it seems that there will be four AI bots added to race.
    • Versus: Players race against each other across four tracks to earn the highest overall points.
    • Battle Arena: Four players race each other while using weapons that they can collect as they race around the track.

Digital Deluxe vs Standard Edition

Bonus content from the Deluxe edition includes instant access to the Nitros Oxide character and kart, both of which are unlockable in Adventure Mode in Standard. Additional content includes exclusive Nitros Oxide, Star Crash, Star Cortex and Star Coco skins, as well as other yet-to-be-determined digital content.

Preorders for either version will also include a kart-sticker pack for kart customizations and a mystery in-game item. The PS4 edition also comes with exclusive retro skins for Crash, Cortex and Coco, including their karts.
